Children are vulnerable to high temperature that increase their chances of getting sick. Their body produces heat faster than adults, but they can’t get rid of it quickly because they don’t sweat as much as adults. Watch babies and young children carefully during hot weather.
They quickly lose body fluids through perspiration, which can lead to dehydration. Hot temperature mainly affects children with infectious diseases, including gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, and malaria. During heat waves, fever and electrolyte imbalance become common among children.
Safety Tips to Beat the Heat
-
Stay Hydrated
Regardless of activity level, children should drink plenty of liquids like lemon water, coconut water, and fresh fruit juices. They should always carry a water bottle when they go out. Avoid sugary beverages such as sodas and sports drinks.
-
Eat Healthy and Nutritious Food
Children should prefer fresh fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals. They must focus on fruits like watermelon, melon, berries, and vegetables like cucumber, celery, and bell peppers as they contain good water content. Avoid junk, oily, and spicy food.
-
Homemade Frozen Delights
Use various fruits to create homemade ice cream and frozen yoghurt. These delights are loaded with key nutrients.
-
Comfortable Clothes
Children should wear lightweight cotton clothes during hot weather.
-
Cool Environment
Children should stay out of direct sunlight, especially during peak hours, 12:00 noon- 4:00 pm.
