COVID-19 Vaccine for Children: FAQs
Q1. Is COVID-19 Vaccination important for your child?
This vaccination is extremely important for your child. It protects him/her from acquiring the infection (asymptomatic mostly) from the corona virus and the consequent risk of getting the disease (mildmostly), which can in some cases lead to severe clinical illness and even serious complications.
Q2. How does the corona virus spread in children?
It spreads wherever people get together in groups, transmitted from one to the other. This can happen at parties, wedding functions and in schools. Transmission of the corona virus is most common at school in children.
Q3. Does every child with COVID-19 virus become sick with the disease
No. Most individuals but especially children may not show severe symptoms or be asymptomatic. They can still carry and transmit the infection to other children and adults (including family members).
Q4. How can one prevent getting corona virus and the disease in children?
The only well-demonstrated method is to administer vaccination to as many people (including children) as possible and as quickly as possible.
Q5. How does the children’s vaccine differ from the adult one?
The vaccine is the same except the quantity of the active ingredient (the antigen) is less in the Paediatric vaccine.
Q6. Are there any side effects of taking the vaccine?
In the vast majority of children, there are no side effects. Occasionally, children may get local effects in terms of pain and redness at the injection site.
Q7. How much does the vaccine help to prevent disease in children, adolescents and adults?
Information available from the Astra Zeneca vaccine (Covishield from Serum Institute of India) shows protection of 70% from the disease and over 90% for hospitalisation. Covaxin (from Bharat Biotech) has similar rates of protection
Q8. How long does protective immunity to the disease last after 2 doses?
Data collected from adult vaccination mentions 4 to 6 months and it is probably the same for children. It may be a longer period for children since their immune system is more robust. With the current vaccines, boosters will be needed at intervals, not unlike what we have for Influenza vaccines.
Q9. What age group of children are currently eligible to get the vaccine?
According to the Health Ministry guidelines, only Covaxin will be administered to children in the age group of 15-18 years. Children who are 15 years or more will be able to register on Co-WIN platform.
Q10. What are the expected changes in the disease and vaccine effectiveness with the emergence of the Omicron strain.
New data is coming in every day. So far the strain appears more infectious than the earlier strains (spreading faster), but fortunately leading to fewer complications and resultant hospitalisations. Vaccination is the only protection we have against the rapidly spreading coronavirus.
Q11. Would the world one day be free of the virus?
Nobody knows the future, but the virus is probably here to stay, just like the Influenza virus which has been with us for decades, if not for centuries.
