Why Is Blepharoplasty Done?
Eyelid lift surgery is done to improve the contour of the eyelids by adding or removing excess fat. In addition to cosmetic reasons, it is performed to improve the sight after an accident.
What to Expect Before Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift Surgery)?
Before the surgery is conducted, the surgeon examines the patient’s eyes. A peripheral vision test may also be performed. The eye surgeon will also discuss the after effects and recovery process in detail along with the precautions that need to be taken before the eyelid surgery. The surgeon will evaluate factors, such as bone structure, underlying facial muscle structure and the symmetry of patient’s eyebrows to know how much skin, muscle and/or fat is to be removed. In the weeks leading up to eyelid surgery, patients should cut down on smoking and alcohol. Usually, eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation.
What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
The procedure starts with the doctor making precise marking to display the excess tissue that needs to be removed. During surgery, slits are made in the natural folds of the eyelid or the crease of the upper eyelid and behind the lower eyelid. In this way, incisions remain imperceptible after the healing. During surgery, some underlying muscle may also be removed.
The doctor will re‐contour tissues to give respite from issues like hooding and puffiness. In a lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made below the lash line to remove excess fat and skin. Sutures or tissue adhesives (glue) are then carefully applied to reconfigure areas around the eyebrows and eyelids.
What to Expect After Blepharoplasty/Surgery for Eye Lift?
Usually, the recovery process after the eyelid surgery lasts for one or two weeks. The patient may experience some bruising or swelling along with numbness, occasional double vision and pain for a while, but these would gradually subside over the time. Patients can also use ice or a cold pack to ease the swelling. During the initial weeks after the surgery, doctors may also ask the patient to wear dark sunglasses to patients to protect their eyes from sunlight, dust and foreign particles.
During the recovery period, any activity that increases blood flow to the eye, including bending, sporting activities, swimming, aerobics, jogging and crying, should be avoided completely. Also, patients are advised not to wear makeup near the incision and avoid driving for minimum 72 hours after the surgery.
Before discharge, doctors will make patients aware of the ways to deal with the small side effects ofthe surgery.
Advantages of Eye Lift Surgery
Though the results of eye lift surgery are unique to each patient; a patient can expect to get the following benefits:
- Fewer wrinkles and lines under eyes
- Youthful look
- No bulging fat and excess skin

FAQs
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids.
Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
Good candidates for blepharoplasty are individuals with droopy or sagging eyelids, puffiness or bags under the eyes, or those who have obstructed vision due to excess eyelid skin.
How long does the blepharoplasty procedure take?
The duration of the procedure takes around 1 to 3 hours.
Is blepharoplasty performed under general anaesthesia?
Blepharoplasty can be performed under either local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the surgeon's preference and the patient's needs.
Will there be visible scars after blepharoplasty?
The incisions made during blepharoplasty are typically placed in the natural creases of the eyelids, making the resulting scars less noticeable. Over time, the scars tend to fade and become even less visible.
What is the recovery period like after blepharoplasty?
The initial recovery period usually lasts about 1 to 2 weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and temporary dryness or irritation of the eyes. Most individuals can resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days.
Are the results of blepharoplasty permanent?
While blepharoplasty can produce long-lasting results, the natural ageing process will continue. However, the improvements achieved through the procedure can generally be enjoyed for many years.
Are there any risks or complications associated with blepharoplasty?
As with any surgery, blepharoplasty carries some risks, such as bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, or changes in vision.
Can blepharoplasty improve vision?
Yes, blepharoplasty can improve vision in cases where excessive eyelid skin obstructs the line of sight.
Will blepharoplasty remove crow's feet or wrinkles around the eyes?
Blepharoplasty primarily targets the excess skin and fat in the eyelid area. While it can smooth out some fine lines and wrinkles, it is not specifically designed to address crow's feet or wrinkles around the eyes.
How long should I wait after blepharoplasty to wear contact lenses or eye makeup?
It is generally recommended to wait at least one to two weeks after blepharoplasty before wearing contact lenses or eye makeup.
Will I experience any pain during or after the blepharoplasty procedure?
During the surgery, anaesthesia will be used to ensure you are comfortable and free of pain. After the procedure, mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common, but these can be managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Can blepharoplasty fix drooping eyebrows?
No, blepharoplasty is primarily focused on improving the appearance of the eyelids and not the eyebrows. If you have significant brow drooping, a brow lift procedure may be more appropriate.
Is there an optimal age to undergo blepharoplasty?
There is no specific optimal age for blepharoplasty, as it depends on individual needs. Some individuals may require the procedure earlier in life due to genetic factors, while others may choose to undergo it later to address ageing concerns.
How soon can I wear glasses after blepharoplasty?
You should avoid wearing glasses directly resting on your nose for at least two weeks after blepharoplasty. If vision correction is necessary during this period, you can use contact lenses or tape your glasses to your forehead.
Will blepharoplasty correct deep tear troughs or hollows under the eyes?
Blepharoplasty alone is not typically effective in treating deep tear troughs or hollows under the eyes. Dermal fillers or fat grafting may be recommended in addition to blepharoplasty to address these concerns.
Are the results of blepharoplasty noticeable immediately after surgery?
The initial results of blepharoplasty will be obscured by swelling and bruising. It may take several weeks for the swelling to fully subside and for the final results to become apparent.
Can blepharoplasty treat puffy eyes caused by allergies or sinus problems?
Blepharoplasty is primarily aimed at addressing excess skin, fat, and muscle in the eyelids. If puffy eyes are caused by allergies or sinus issues, it is best to consult with an allergist or an otolaryngologist for appropriate treatment options.
How do I choose the right surgeon for my blepharoplasty?
It is crucial to select a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in eyelid surgery. Look for a surgeon who specializes in facial procedures and has a portfolio of before and after photos demonstrating successful outcomes. Additionally, read patient reviews and seek recommendations from trusted sources.
