In cold weather, the risk of stroke increases in patients who are at risk of having a stroke or earlier had a stroke. There are five factors that increase the risk of stroke in winter.

- Respiratory infection

- Hypertension - Cold weather causes constriction of blood vessels, leading to hypertension, which increases the risk of stroke. One should wear adequate warm clothes and maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. Regular monitoring of blood pressure should be done, especially for hypertensive patients who are on treatment for it.
- Dehydration - Decreased water intake usually occurs in winter. In addition to this, there is an increased loss of water from the body secondary to the use of indoor heating systems. Adequate voluntary water intake should be maintained to decrease the increased risk of stroke.
- Reduced Physical Activity - Because of cold weather, outdoor physical activity is reduced. The sedentary lifestyle is there, especially in winter, which causes obesity and high blood pressure. Winter-friendly indoor exercise and activity should be incorporated to reduce the risk.
- Dietary Changes – Heavier and high-calorie food is part of the winter season. A friendly, healthy diet which includes fruits, vegetables and whole grains should be part of the diet, especially in winter.
- Respiratory Infection – There is an increased risk of the common cold and flu, especially in winter, which causes inflammation in the body and puts stress on the cardiac system, leading to an increased risk of stroke. One should maintain good respiratory hygiene and get vaccinated against flu.

To conclude, prevention from cold weather, maintaining adequate water intake, doing regular exercise, maintaining good respiratory hygiene, and using healthy food in the diet decrease the increased risk of stroke in winter.
